EQUITY AND ACCESSIBILITY

Institutional Policy (Extracted from Educational Equity Policy, as published in the University Calendars):

• Carleton University is committed to providing equity in its programs and services and a welcoming environment for all individuals regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, national origin, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, or disability as defined in the Human Rights Code of Ontario.
• Carleton seeks to increase the access, retention and graduation of groups of students who have traditionally been under-represented, under-served and/or disadvantaged in University programs.
• Carleton seeks to provide a supporting and welcoming learning environment for all students.

Commentary:



• Carleton has not carried out a full equity census of its student population, however, sample data is available from student surveys. The figures show that Carleton has a greater representation of all measured designated groups than the national sample as a whole - however, the error rates inherent in a survey of this size indicate that these differences are not statistically significant. Carleton has a lower representation of female students than the national sample (though still greater than 50%). In surveys of this type there is a noted bias toward female respondents - the true figure for Carleton, for the population measured in the latest survey, is 52% female.
• Work force figures are presented using information taken largely from the employment equity census and maintained by updates from new employees. Data is collected in compliance with the Federal Contractors Program.
