INTERNAL BALANCE
Institutional Goal:
- Increase the number of Honours students as a proportion of total undergraduate students.
- Maintain the current ratio of graduate enrolment relative to undergraduate enrolment (approx. 1:7).
- Promote Carleton's identity as… a national leader in the study of public affairs and management and the study of "high technology"…
[by increasing enrolment in these programs as a proportion of total undergraduate enrolment].
Commentary:
- The percentage of undergraduate students in Honours B.A., B.Sc. and B.Math programs has been climbing steadily and overall stands
at 53% in 2000/01. In B.Math, however, while the number of students in Honours has increased, the percentage of students has fallen
from 1999/00 to 2000/01.
- The proportion of graduate students as a percentage of the total student body has been steady at approximately 15.5% (1:6.5) for the
last four years.
- The proportion of the undergraduate student body enrolled in the B.A. program has declined steadily for the past few years but did
not change markedly between 1999/00 and 2000/01. The proportion in the B.A. now stands at 41% of the total. Enrolment in "high
technology" has been growing steadily (2% for each of the last three years) and now stands at 23% of enrolment. ("High technology"is
defined using the provincial criteria for acceptance in the Access to Opportunities (ATOP) Program - see Section XIV).
- Public Affairs and Management (PAM) programs have increased over the past few years (though not over last year) and the PAM
Faculty is now the largest at 35% of the university enrolment. In terms of course credits taught, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
(FASS) contributed 38% of the total credits in 1999/00. FASS and Science both teach more course credits than their corresponding
share of total enrolments.
